Study Finds GPA Stronger Than ACT in Predicting College Success

“Contrary to popular belief, students’ high school grade point averages are five times stronger than ACT scores at predicting college graduation. That’s according to a new study published in Educational Researcher.”

As the debate continues to whether to keep or eliminate the ACT college requirement, this study strengthens the case that the GPA is a stronger predictor. However, those advocating keeping the ACT speak to the need for the additional input to make a complete assessment of a student’s eligibility. The issue for students of color who have limited resources is also a factor that needs to be addressed.
