How Much Does Missing School Matter for Young Children? Unexcused and Excused

While we would expect that absences would affect student achievement, what the research found was that “unexcused absences had a much stronger association with achievement growth than excused absences.”

Comment: Instead of viewing absences totally and chronic absences as 18 or more absences, it’s important to note the difference between excused and unexcused absences. Whether a student attends school, in large part, resides with the parent. Schools can work with parents to understand the consequences of poor school attendance.
